HIKING, HORSES AND NOMADS
Tour 256
Hike and ride on horseback through the Mongolian steppe and live like nomads. Like the Mongolian saying, "The steppe gives freedom, the steppe gives happiness", we will experience the steppe of Mongolia as a nomad experiences it. This trip is a combination trip, the longer distances will be covered by vehicle, always loosened up by hiking and riding stages with horse or camel. For all parts of the program, you need an average physical condition. Riding experience is desirable. To experience the originality of the Mongolian landscape, with the almost endless expanse, the grass steppe and the nomads living isolated in it, but at the same time to be active, is the focus of this trip. On the way on the horseback, is for Mongolia, the most original form of travel. The vastness of the grasslands, formally invites you to do so. In cooperation with a horse breeder family, which selects the optimal horses for you, the ride leads you through the typical Mongolian grass steppe, while our luggage is transported on a yak cart.
Description
To experience the originality of the Mongolian landscape, with the sheer endless expanse, the grass steppe and the nomads living isolated in it, but at the same time to be active, is the focus of this trip. The journey will be loosened up again and again by day hikes, or stages of several days on the horse.
We start our journey in the Hognon Han mountains. This small mountain range, on the edge of the Orkhon valley, is the starting point for exploring Central Mongolia. The Orkhon valley has always been a melting pot of different cultures. Even before Chingges Khan founded his capital “Karakorum” here, other, older cultures left their traces in the Orkhon valley. We will visit these old palaces and castles during this trip.
Walking through the almost untouched nature of Mongolia, allows a completely new perspective for the environment. Virtually at “eye level” with nature, the eye is trained for the little things along the way. The contact to the people living in this landscape becomes much more intensive.
On the way on the horseback, is for Mongolia, the most original form of travel. The vastness of the grasslands, formally invites. In cooperation with a horse breeder family, who will choose the best horses for you, the ride will lead you through the typical Mongolian grass steppe, while our luggage will be transported on a yak cart.
This trip is a combination trip, the larger distances are covered by vehicle, always loosened up by hiking and riding stages. For all parts of the program, you need an average physical condition. Horse riding experience is desirable.
Itinerary
1. Day | Arrival in Ulaanbaatar, airport transfer and after an introductory talk and after moving into your room at the hotel, sightseeing of Ulaanbaatar begins. You will visit the famous Gandan Monastery, the old winter palace of the last king (Khan) In the evening you will visit a folklore performance with traditional musical instruments and the famous throat singing. |
2. Day | Departure to the Hognon han mountains. On the way we will stop at the Hustain Nuruu National Park to see the Przewalskij horses. The drive will take us through the typical Mongolian grass steppe. |
3. Day | Today we will drive to Karakorum, the former capital of the Mongol Empire. In the early afternoon we will visit the remains of the old capital and have the life n the city explained to us at that time. An excavation site under German supervision illustrates the development of the city particularly well. You will have ample time to see everything at your leisure. The second place to visit this day is the monastery of Erdene Zuu. The monastery was the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia and can be traced back to the middle of the 15th century (Prince Abatai Khan). The name of the monastery can be translated as "Precious Sanctuary". The monastery was built after the disintegration of Karakorum and the stones of the old city were used to build the monastery. In an extensive tour, we will visit the entire monastery complex. In the afternoon, continue along the Orkhon River to Tuvhun Monastery. This hermitage used to be part of Erdene Zuu Monastery and has been completely rebuilt in recent years. Our vehicles will not take us all the way to the monastery, but we will hike part of the way through the beautiful valley. We will visit the monastery and have our lunch break high above the valley. |
4. Day | Today we will go to the Orkhon waterfall. The drive will take you through a distinctly scenic valley. Our buses will stop just before the Orkhon Waterfall and they will hike the last kilometers (about 8) to the Orkhon Waterfall. We will explore the waterfall and in the meantime our team has prepared a hearty "snack" for us at the riverside. |
5. Day | Today starts the riding tour with our horses. The luggage is loaded onto the waiting yak carts and off we go with the riding stage. The way leads on the first day over lava fields with granite stones and old trees. The pace is now a bit slower as the yaks walk ahead. In the late afternoon you will reach your campsite in a clearing in the forest. |
6. Day | Today we ride the whole day in the Naiman Nuur (Eight Lakes) Nature Park. Slowly we will go uphill towards the Eight Lakes. We will pass beautiful mountain meadows and high valleys. Gradually the vehicle tracks become thinner and thinner and we are in the middle of the nature reserve. We will camp for the night just before the pass to the first of the eight lakes. |
7. Day | Our last day where we will be on the way with the horses. The path will lead us along the Eight Lakes. We will have a wonderful view of the constantly changing landscape. In the afternoon we will reach our destination, a small yurt camp and we will say goodbye to our companions. |
8. Day | In the morning, arrival in Arwaicheer. There we will visit the market, where we will also refresh our supplies for the last part of the trip. While the cooking team is shopping, you can walk around the market at your leisure and see the colorful hustle and bustle. The road now takes us out of the Archangai Mountains south towards the Gobi. We always drive along the Ongii River. Slowly the landscape changes from steppe to desert. Our destination is the small village of Bayangol, on the banks of the Ongii River. ) |
9. Day | We walk along the Ongii River towards the monastery ruins of Ongii. The path leads us first through the vastness of the desert, until then the “Black Mountains” appears in front of us, where the Ongii River has cut through. The path now becomes narrower and we walk through a unique river valley. Arrival at the former Ongij Monastery, a very extensive monastic complex. The monastery is located on the course of the Ongii River in a beautiful landscape. Here there is a possibility to make small hikes in the rocky gorges. |
10. Day | Short walk and visit to the monastery ruins of Ongij. This monastery complex was one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia and was equivalent to the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Walking through the ruins of the monastery, one can still get a good idea of the former size of the monastery. Of the original more than 900 monasteries in Mongolia, Ongij Monastery was the largest. At that time, up to 10,000 monks lived here. The monastery was almost completely destroyed in the 1930s. Only after the “Wende” it was slowly rebuilt. Today only a few monks live here. The monastery is located directly on the Ongii River in a beautiful black rock landscape. With our vehicle we continue to Baiandzag (Red Cliff’s). Baiandzag is also known as the dinosaur graveyard, because the first large dinosaur bones were found here during the Mongolia expedition under Sven Hedin. In the evening we will experience a beautiful sunset. The sandstone rock formation of Baiandzag will turn into a fantastic red color. |
11. Day | On the northern side of the “Gurvan Saihkan” mountains we drive today to the Vulture Gorge. The canyon starts in a very narrow valley and there are large ice masses in it until well into the summer. From Dalandzagad the journey continues towards Tsagaan Suwarga Canyon. Now we slowly leave the Gobi. The landscape becomes noticeably greener. |
12. Day | The penultimate day in the Mongolian grass steppe has begun. At the end of the trip we will come to one of the most interesting rock formations in Mongolia, the small “Earth Mother Stones” (Baga Gazriin Chuluu). |
13. Day | In the morning, return to Ulaanbaatar. Afterwards, free time in the city. |
14. Day | Return flight |
