Travel information

Not only will you start your trip with great interest in Mongolia, but you will definitely want to know how the itinerary will be along the way. Here we have listed a small selection of the most important points.

Procedure and organization

Steppenfuchs Reisen, whether simple round trip, expedition, or horse trekking, are designed so that any adventurous traveler can participate. The goal of each trip is to discover and experience the different Mongolian landscapes and ways of life. Flexibility, bringing positive, renouncing the usual comfort, are qualities you should bring to the success of a trip. The nature can be planned least, moreover, there are always situations which encourage to stay in one place. As a result, the trips do not slavishly follow the schedule, which can then lead to changes in the course. It makes sense to have a dialogue between the tour guide and you. We are not slavishly bound to the tour schedule. Only in the conversation on the way always arise wishes, which we would like to meet, if possible.

Guide, driver and helpers

The right team, is the be-all and end-all of a trip and much depends on a good tour guide. Our tour guides are exclusively Mongolians with good knowledge of the country, who are ambassadors of their country in the truest sense of the word. The tour guides all speak sufficiently the national language of their guests. What they all have in common is that they are not trained scientists and therefore cannot give scientific lectures. However, they do their best to bridge the cultural gap for you and let you participate in a foreign culture. Of course, the team also includes the drivers, animal guides and, depending on the size of the group, a cook and other helpers. These bring themselves naturally with in. Many small organizational things are done by them mostly unnoticed in the background and thus contribute to the success of a trip.

Driving and hazards

Steppenfuchs Reisen uses exclusively Russian all-terrain vehicles, either the jeep or the all-terrain minibus, depending on the size of the group. There is a reason for this, because according to our experience only these vehicles are able to cope with the demands and because they can be repaired by the drivers everywhere and at any time due to their simple technology. If you wish, you can of course also make your trip in a western off-road vehicle. Our drivers have been traveling in the country for many years and know the routes. But also here the course of the tracks changes constantly, so it is not excluded that the drivers have to ask nomads from time to time, which is then again a nice opportunity to look into a yurt and the yurt life. If you are traveling by horse or camel, you will be familiarized with the animals in detail before the start. Horse or camel tours always present us with a great logistical challenge, as sufficient food and water must be provided. Here, changes in the route may occur due to weather conditions

Food? Not only mutton

Do not believe the horror stories about the monotony of Mongolian food while traveling! Steppenfuchs Reisen tries to offer you a varied menu. In most cases, fresh food is used. This is not always easy, because you can only get small amounts of food on the way. The guides, get what is missing, then with the nomads on the way. Cooked is a mixture of Mongolian and European food. Thus, all participants have the opportunity to enjoy the local cuisine. In the countryside, almost all trips are full board. In most cases, you will shop together with the guide at the market at the beginning of a tour. If you like vegetarian food and let us know in advance, we can arrange it. You don't have to bring any dishes with you to Mongolia. We will provide you with everything from plates and cutlery to napkins. Only one wish we have, if you want to eat vegetarian, please let us know in advance. We will try to take this into account on the way.

Group size

A balanced travel group is the key to a good tour. Steppenfuchs Reisen only travels with small groups. The max. group size is 8 - 12 persons. This makes many encounters with nomads possible and allows you to experience the region much more intensively. Small groups also mean that everyone has to help and help with the daily routine. Only in the team it goes with some of the tours really smoothly.

Riding, the alternative

Some of our guests have horseback riding on the program, or come specifically to Mongolia for horseback riding. Certainly, in the land of horses riding is simply part of it. The horses here are rather calm and willing, although some have a mind of their own. Please note that experience in horseback riding is not essential, but very useful. The animals you will be given to ride are normal horses, like those used by the nomads. You must also be prepared to learn the necessary Mongolian words for right, left, stop, etc. At the end of the day you have to take care of your mount and prepare it for the night, where it can recover from the day's exertions, just like you. Absolutely necessary are riding boots or similar. Helmet and pants are not, but quite useful.

Sleeping during the trip

When choosing accommodation, we try to use country-specific accommodation as often as possible. In the countryside, we primarily camp. If it is suitable or you wish, we also stay in yurt camps. We have chosen for you brand tents of the company DECLATHLON. These robust, easy and quick to set up tents have proven to be the best for us. If it can be arranged, or if the weather is once again exceptionally bad. You can also spend the night in the yurts of the nomads. This is usually a special experience, when you can experience the nomads everyday life. In Ulaanbaatar, we have a number of good middle class hotels at our disposal.

Background knowledge

With our pages about the background of Mongolia you have the possibility to get more detailed information. We don't want to compete with travel guides with these pages, but only give answers to the most important questions. The pages will be updated in irregular intervals by our staff.
