This tour can be done on two different BMW motorcycles. There is a choice of the BMW 1200 GS and if that is too big and heavy, you are welcome to ride the tour on the BMW 800 GS.
Due to the extreme altitude of Lhasa, we will spread the journey over two days, so that we and to the friendly 3,700 mtr on which the city of Lhasa is located. If you wish, you can also travel from Beijing to Lhasa by train.
This tour leads directly into the Himalayan Mountains without any detours. However, the tour schedule is very much dependent on the “goodwill” of the Chinese authorities and each participant in this tour should be prepared for the fact that there may be spontaneous changes in the itinerary on the way.
1.Day | Meeting in Frankfurt and flight from Frankfurt to China and journey towards Lhasa. |
2.Day | Onward flight to Lhasa and arrival in Lhasa in the early afternoon. Airport transfer and get acquainted with our Chinese guides. The rest of the day will be at leisure. Lhasa is located 3,700 mtr above sea level. It will take some time to get used to the altitude. |
3.Day | We will start tomorrow morning by applying for the Tibetan temporary driver’s license for you. After that, we will start our Lhasa exploration today with an exciting visit to the unique Potala Palace, considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. We will also visit the Jokhang Temple, considered the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism. Our tour of Lhasa will not end without walking the Barkhor Road, the ancient route to circumambulate the Jokhang Temple. The last place of the day will be the famous Sear Monastery, where you will have the opportunity to observe monks debating in a courtyard as they have done for hundreds of years. |
4.Day | After breakfast we will start our tour and we will drive towards Shigatse. The ride leads into a beautiful valley and we will drive along the Yarlung Zangbo River for a while. Later the road will lead us again through the Tibetan highlands to the city of Shigatse. In the afternoon we will visit the 100-year-old ancient temple -Tashilumpo Temple, where the Panchen Lamas lived. |
5.Day | We leave and drive through Lazi to the Tingri region, where the Everest Nature Reserve is located. Here we experience the most spectacular alpine landscape in the world with soaring snow peaks and there are four peaks over 8000 meters in the area. After dinner, check in to the hotel and rest. We will have time to prepare for tomorrow, when we will make an excursion to the foot of Mt. Everest. Here we will drive the road of 99 curves. |
6.Day | Today is more challenging than yesterday. We will cross the Gaura Pass, which is 5198 meters above sea level. If the weather is good, we can see the four snow-capped mountains, Mount Lhotse, Mount Makalu, Mount Cho Oyu and Mount Everest, which are all above 8,000 mtr. After conquering the 99 curves of Everest Road, we will visit Rongbuk Monastery and enjoy the spectacular view of the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest. |
7.Day | After breakfast we will drive to Saga, which means "beautiful place" in Tibetan. On the way to Saga, there is a district called Lhatse. It is the hometown of the "Duixie Dance". Saga has vast grassy fields surrounded by high mountains, to the north stands the Gangdes Mountains, to the south the Himalayas. It is also in the middle of the Gora Mountains and the Tongri-Rongbu Mountains. The altitude rises well above 4,600 meters during the day’s journey. |
8.Day | After breakfast we will drive to Tsochen. We will drive mostly through the Tibetan grasslands. On the way, with a little luck, we will encounter a variety of different wildlife. On the way to Tsochen we will also pass the largest Chinese geyser, Dagejia Pohutu Geyser. The duration of each eruption is not consistent. Sometimes they last longer than 10 minutes. Sometimes only a brief moment and disappear in an instant. The scene of the water eruption is really spectacular. In the evening we drive past the highest lake in the world, Dajia Tso. |
9.Day | After breakfast we will drive to Tarinam tso, the third largest lake in Tibet. Enjoy the beautiful sunrise on the plateau where the lake is located. The lake and the sky merge into a single blue. The way to the lake is off-road, but it is worth the effort to then feel the unique atmosphere that the lake radiates on the shore. Driving along the lake shore, we will always come across small groups of Tibetan antelopes, wild donkeys and other wild animals. |
10.Day | In the morning, we will drive along Provincial Highway 206 to Dongcuo and then turn onto Provincial Highway 301 to enter the core area of "Qiangtang Nature Reserve". Covering an area of over 334,000 square kilometers, the "Qiangtang Nature Reserve" is the third largest land nature reserve in the world, larger than 183 countries in the world. Here we will encounter many wild animals living around the highland lake. Our destination for the day is the Nyima region. "Nyima" is the meaning of sun in Tibetan, a sacred word. |
11.Day | In the morning today we will drive to the essential parts of Tibet. The local name for this region is "Ali". Ali is also called "Ngari" in Tibetan language, is located in the west of Tibet and is the most mysterious place in the region known as the "Roof of the World". The vast lake divides the vast land of Tibet. Along the national road 317, we will always have beautiful views of the beautiful blue lakes, such as Dazetso, Wu Rutso, Qiaqitso, Cuoyu and the largest lake in Tibet, Selintso. |
12.Day | Another great day in Tibet begins for us. In the morning we drive on the S203 to Gyantse. We pass Namling Nature Reserve, which is the largest and highest reserve and breeding ground for black-necked cranes. If we are lucky, we have a chance to see the black-necked cranes here. After arriving in Gyantse, we will check in at the hotel. From the hotel, we can see Gyantse Ancient Castle, known as Hero Castle. Gyantse Dzong or Gyantse Fortress is one of the best preserved dzongs (fortress) in Tibet and towers high above the town of Gyantse on a huge gray-brown rocky outcrop. |
13.Day | Our last driving day in Tibet. We head back towards Lhasa in the morning over the 4990 meter Gonbara Mountain pass. We pass the mighty and shimmering Karola Glacier before reaching one of the three sacred Tibetan lakes, Yamdrok Tso. We can enjoy the best Tibetan scenery today and take some photos. Arrived in Lhasa, we return our motorcycles, make the obligatory group connection photo and at a joint dinner, we let the last days pass us by again. |
14.Day | Return day. Due to the time difference, we manage the return flight in one day. |
